The Blair Witch Project was released in 1999, garnering rave reviews and terrifying audiences. As King notes, part of the success of the movie was in how real it felt. At the time, audiences were not as familiar with found footage movies—which purport to be just that, “found footage” rather than something scripted—and the Blair Witch actors were complete unknowns who stayed out of the spotlight during the promotional campaign.
